Tom McCarthy serves as Executive Vice President, Post Production Facilities, at Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE). He manages the studios’ sound editorial and mixing departments and oversees the creation of soundtracks for television and films. He also facilitates technical collaboration between the studio’s sound facilities and engineering teams from Sony Corporation to further the development of consumer and professional products.

McCarthy began his career in 1975 at MGM Studios. He was a sound editor on such classic television shows as “How the West Was Won,” “CHIPS” and “Logan’s Run” eventually becoming a supervising sound editor. In 1985, he formed the independent sound company The Sound Choice and led it until he joined SPE five years later. In 1992, he won an Academy Award® in Sound Editing for Bram Stoker's Dracula. McCarthy is also the recipient of a British Academy Award (BAFTA) for Out of Africa and an MPSE Golden Reel Award for the television movie Doll Maker.

McCarthy is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a past member of its Executive Sound Branch Board. He is also a member of both the Television Academy and Cinema Audio Society and sits on the Sound Peer Group Executive Committee. He previously served as President of the Motion Picture Sound Editors.
